Discussion notes for Tips for Seniors Who Drive
- Speak out loud what you intend to do before you do the direction. (Eg. “slow down to 30kph at school zone”, “get in right hand lane to turn onto Park”)
- Minor reposition side mirrors. Lean forward to the left, then move the mirror to just view the side of the vehicle, then lean forward to the right and adjust that side mirror.
- WAZE is the best navigation system app. It know where traffic is slow, road blocks, accidents. Have a mount on the front dash for the phone for easy access to see and hear.
- Attend to the side lanes of where you are driving. That’s where trouble will come from.
- When turning right, keep tight to the right lane, so if inattentive drivers behind are able to move over and avoid an accident.
- Plan to drive in the city when it not busy. ( not noon, rush hour, weekends)
- Before making a driving maneuver, make sure you make eye contact with the other driver.
- Cliff’s final comment, “You can only give a right of way.”
- Make an appointment with a driver instructor to brush up on your driving and know the new rules of the road.
- Read through MB driver’s handbook on line.
- If you receive a warning from an officer for an infraction, 3 warnings is a removal of license. After a set amount of years, the warnings are removed from your record.
- Thank you to Cliff Morrison for leading our discussion and John Houston for his contributions. The are both retired driver instructors.
